We were deeply saddened to learn about the recent passing of Sam Newcomer Sr., from Emmett, following a courageous battle with cancer. Sam was not only a big supporter of Firebird, but also raced for several years in a variety of classes along side of his son, former High School track champion Sam Jr.

One of the nicest people you could ever cross paths with, Sam was truly the salt of the earth. Both Sam and his son competed at a wide variety of races. When they first started racing a number of years ago, together they shared one late-model Camaro that became a familiar sight at Firebird. But eventually Sam Sr., wanted to participate with his own entry, putting together an early 70’s Camaro so he could run Sportsman, Alumni, Outlaw Street and other assorted categories.

Sam was also a very experienced and a talented driver in the world of oval track racing, too, having raced a variety of stock cars at Meridian Speedway and other venues when the family lived in southern California (before moving to Emmett a number of years ago).

On behalf of every member of the New family, our staff and the racing community, we wish to convey our sympathies and prayers to Michelle, Sam Jr., close friends and acquaintances. God speed, Sam.
