There are people from all walks of life that leave a lasting memory, an indelible footprint that is hard to put into words. It seems all too soon for this world to endure the loss of Michael Bartone, 65, who passed away on March 14, 2025.
“It doesn’t seem fair in my eyes,” reflected Firebird General Manager Scott New. “Here’s a guy in the prime of his life that literally did everything he wanted. Near the top of his list was owning one of the top running Nitro Cars in the country. This news flat out crushes all of us in the New family.”
To put it mildly, Michael held nothing back. He was all in or nothing—a tough New Yorker to the core. Always a man of his word. If Michael told us he was going to enter and compete with his AA/Funny Car team at the Ignitor or Nightfire, you could damn well bet their operation would make the tow from New York to Idaho, no expense spared.
When Michael and Tony teamed up on their AA/Fuel Dragster, it didn’t take long before it became the dominating force of the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Series. They won the Nightfire, blasted both ends of the Firebird track record (still holding the speed mark at 267.37 mph) and literally conquered the Heritage Series for several race seasons.
After developing a joint venture with Tony Lebor, Michael put all resources behind a sojourn into the Nitro Funny Car class. They were always a proven contender and just a stone’s throw away from climbing to the top of Mt. McKinley in the racing world.
Michael’s passion for racing was matched only by his generosity and determination. His larger-than-life presence in the pits and his unwavering commitment to excellence made him a respected figure throughout the drag racing community.
On behalf of all of us in the New family, our entire staff and the racing community, we send our condolences and sincere sympathy to the entire Bartone family and all who considered Michael a dear friend.
God speed, Michael. Your legacy on the track and in our hearts will never be forgotten.
