It is with heavy hearts that we mark the passing of one of drag racing’s true giants—Jerry “the King” Ruth—who left us on July 1 at the age of 87.
A fierce competitor, larger-than-life personality, and unforgettable presence in the sport, Ruth left an indelible mark not only at Firebird Raceway, but across the entire drag racing world. Known for his commanding presence, Ruth didn’t just race—he dominated. His philosophy was simple and uncompromising: winning was everything; losing was unacceptable.
Whether you called him The King or The Boss, Ruth carried himself with a confidence and fire that few could match. His name alone brought intensity to the staging lanes and anticipation to the grandstands.
He competed at both the inaugural Nightfire 500 in 1972, as well as the very first Ignitor Opener in 1971. Over the years, Jerry went on to collect major Firebird titles at both the 1972 and 1974 Ignitor, along with multiple victories at NHRA World Championship Series events. His impact on our track’s legacy is deep and enduring.
In 1971, Ruth made history at Firebird by winning both Top Fuel and Funny Car at a single WCS meet—a performance still remembered as one of the most remarkable achievements in Firebird history.
Originally inspired by track general manager Bill New, “The King” was invited to a special Top Fuel match race against “Big Daddy” Don Garlits on July 6, 1973. It would become one of the rare occasions Ruth was stopped at Firebird. In his only appearance in western Idaho, Garlits took the best-of-three showdown in front of a packed and enthusiastic Treasure Valley crowd.
Reflecting back, it was especially gratifying to welcome Jerry and his original cacklefest Top Fueler to the 2017 Boise Roadster Show in celebration of Firebird’s 50th anniversary season. He fired up the nitro burner all three days (YOUTUBE VIDEO), thrilling the crowd with the raw, thunderous sound that only “The King” could deliver. It was a full-circle moment—both a tribute to his legacy and a gift to fans new and old.
But beyond the trophies and records, Jerry Ruth inspired generations. Whether you were a fellow racer, track official, or a wide-eyed young fan lucky enough to hand him a plaque in the winner’s circle, you couldn’t help but feel the weight of his passion for the sport.
Jerry wasn’t just in drag racing—he was drag racing. He carried himself with confidence, pride, and a commitment to excellence that set a standard few could match.
Today, we honor “the King”—not just for his wins, but for the spirit he brought to the lanes, the memories he helped create, and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
Our deepest condolences go out to his wife Cindy, his family, and all those who called him a friend throughout his remarkable career.
Godspeed, Jerry.
You will always be a part of the Firebird family.
