REMEMBERING ED CUTLER
Enthusiastic, hard-working, and deeply dedicated — these are just a few of the qualities that defined our friend, Ed Cutler. It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of his passing.
For decades, Ed was a loyal and respected presence at Firebird, competing in the highly competitive Super Pro class. Many will remember his distinctive Vega panel wagon — a car capable of running deep into the low 9-second zone at nearly 150 mph — and the unique twist of a Ford engine powering his Chevrolet body.
Ed began chasing points at Firebird in the mid-90’s. After several seasons of learning, refining, and competing, he came close to a track championship in 2006, finishing second to John Shaffer. Two years later, in 2008, his persistence paid off when he captured the Super Pro track championship and was honored as Bracket Racer of the Year.
Over nearly thirty years of racing, the Cutler team achieved many remarkable victories. Among his most notable accomplishments were winning the Super Pro title at the Division 6 Team Finals not once, but twice — in 2008 and again in 2015. These triumphs earned Ed the opportunity to compete at the NHRA World Finals in Pomona, California, representing Firebird on a national stage.
“Ed was truly one of the most devoted and committed racers we’ve ever had at Firebird,” shared Firebird manager Scott New. “He worked tirelessly on his combination, always striving to make it more consistent week after week. We will miss not only his skill and determination, but the genuine passion he brought to our sport and our facility.”
Ed’s legacy extends far beyond his racing achievements. He was a valued member of our racing family, respected for his sportsmanship, perseverance, and genuine friendship.
The entire New family, along with our staff and the racing community, is deeply saddened by his loss. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Donella, his family, close friends, and all whose lives he touched.
Godspeed, Ed. You will be missed, but never forgotten.
