OWEN SETS NEW SUPERCHARGED TRACK RECORD AT FIREBIRD

Troy Owen from Albany, Ore., blistered the Firebird track record at the 34th Annual Snap On Oldies But Goodies Drags at Firebird Raceway. Competing in AA/Supercharged qualifying, Owen recorded a 6.76 elapsed time at 209.69 miles per hour. The ten-year old track marks were previously held by Rich Roberts (6.79) and Mitch Chamberlin (209.09). A dramatic qualifying crash also delayed action as Scott Wyke, Bend, Ore., flipped his `41 Willys coupe on his burnout, flipping the car in spectacular fashion before slamming into the retaining wall. Fortunately enough, the driver walked away from the accident.

Racing continues on Sunday with gates open at 9 am and first round of racing at noon. Adult admission is $12, 6-12 $5 and 5 & under free.

BRONCO MOTORS HOT TRUCK NATIONALS AND GOLD CUP POINT'S RACE

BRONCO MOTORS HOT TRUCK NATIONALS AND GOLD CUP POINT’S RACE

The Firebird staff once again went the extra mile to dry the track after a strong weather system dumped rain virtually all morning long at the Bronco Motors Hot Truck Nationals. Some doubted whether a car or truck would be run down the quarter-mile on Sunday. But following a ton of hard work and effort (and plenty of drying equipment ranging from blowers to vacuum trucks; brooms to squuegies, and a ton of determined workers), racing kicked off shortly after 12:30 pm. After one complete time trial session for all racers, the first round of eliminations started at 2:20 pm. The only interruption was not one, not two, but three separate rain squalls in the afternoon that delayed racing for a short period of time following each cloudburst.

In the end (around 7:05 pm) a variety of champions were crowned. Noteworthy of all the final rounds was the shootout in Super Pro eliminator. Troy Thomas unleashed a perfect .000 against an otherwise killer .001 light by Mark Barnhart. Both ran .01 over the dial, but the stripe favored Thomas (running into a pretty stout headwind as storms continued building off into the horizon). It was an amazing way to finish up a pretty challenging, but successful day of racing.

Individual winners in the NHRA Division 6 Land of the Leaders point’s series were: Thomas, David Deming, Gerard Stanberry, David Meimann, and Michael Jaggers. This was the second event in the four-race series (first stop was Sunday of the Season Opener). Two more events will take place in June and July.
