We’re beyond excited to announce that Butch Leal, one of drag racing’s most iconic and respected figures, will be a special guest of honor at this year’s Oldies Drags presented by Project Filter at Firebird!

Leal, famously known as the “California Flash,” carved out an extraordinary career that spanned several decades and multiple racing classes. His trademark red, white, and blue Pro Stock machines left a lasting impression on fans and competitors alike, helping to define a golden era in drag racing history. From the early days of Stock and Super Stock to his dominating runs in Pro Stock, Leal’s name became synonymous with speed, consistency, and a relentless drive to win.

What makes this appearance even more special is that it marks Butch’s first return to Firebird since 1971, when he squared off in a memorable match race against the equally famous “Redlight Bandit” of Bill Bagshaw. That event remains a fond memory for longtime fans of the track and a milestone in Firebird’s storied past.

Throughout his career, Leal earned a reputation not only for his quick reaction times and exceptional driving skill, but also for his professionalism and sportsmanship. His contributions to the sport were recognized with his induction into the Mopar Hall of Fame in 2014 and the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 2015 — honors that reflect his enduring legacy and influence on the drag racing community.

This year’s Oldies Drags will be a unique opportunity for fans of all ages to meet one of the sport’s true legends. Whether you followed his career in the 1960s and ’70s or are just discovering his story today, Butch Leal’s appearance is sure to be a highlight of the event. Come join us in welcoming the California Flash back to Firebird — it’s a homecoming more than 50 years in the making!

Butch will have a display area set up in the pit area, giving you an opportunity to not only meet him in person, but also capture one of his books looking back at his career in the sport.

Don’t miss this incredible moment in Firebird history. Mark your calendars, bring your cameras, and be part of the celebration as we honor a man who helped shape the sport we all love.
